This gives the game a genuine pace to it, as staying still and sniping will just lead to a slow eventual death. In fact without them you are next to useless. ![]() Essentially the main goal of the game is to suppress, outmanoeuvre and outflank your enemy with these squads. You have six men or the occasional tank to command, split into two fire teams. You play as a squad commander, and you do exactly that. It is in comparison to these that Brothers in Arms truly shines.įINALLY rather than being a simple observer you can directly affect the movement of the battle. What with the torrent of WW2 themed shooters over the years, Brothers in Arms feels like a genuine breath of fresh air. Things like the suppression system are interesting additions to combat though, and while the majority of the experience isn’t too bumpy, the niggling nuisances will rise up at inopportune times, dragging down a game that did try to break the World War II shooter mold but didn’t have the technical expertise to back up its new elements. To try and encourage use of your squads, your own shooting isn’t too effective, but your squad tactics are pretty much limited to flanking foes in areas designed only for that one tactic. The AI of your teammates can be annoying to deal with as they sometimes refuse to listen or put themselves in danger inexplicably, and the story is mostly one man telling you how tight-knit the regiment is with only a few moments showing real interaction between the troops. Don't expect to have an easy ride with it but, sometimes, this is one of the most affecting, games on PS2.īrothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 wanted to emphasize that war is a team effort through its mechanics and story, but it comes up short in both regards. Yet, as a reminder of the harsh realities of war, it's undoubtedly a success. Road To Hill 30 could have done with more polishing up and sometimes it's infuriatingly difficult or inconsistent, despite its undoubted depth. There's no option to send a ham to each man's widow, but you can't help wishing that there were. It's impossible not to care about these people and you will be upset when one pegs it. The acting's not great, the dialogue's ropey but they've been injected with enough personality as to be affecting. They holler 'Bakeeerrr!' when you die, they make cracks about Nazis drinking blood for breakfast, they look terrified when faced with death and they all trust you implicitly, following you to death's door and beyond.
